New Blog - Thrive with Hemsath

For those of you who haven't heard, I've started a new business. I am an independent consultant for Shelf Reliance, a company specializing in emergency preparedness items. They have some great shelving and food rotation systems, to help get your pantries and cupboards organized (You may have seen the Cansolidator in stores or friend's pantries, of the Harvest free standing shelves at certain Costcos). They sell other camping and emergency items like water purification, tents, solar charged items, etc. But my favorite thing they sell is their line of delicious, nutritious, long-term food storage items called THRIVE. I won't bore you with all the details, but let's just say that I have milk, meat, eggs, butter, sour cream, mozzarella, strawberries, mushrooms, spinach, all kinds of produce just sitting in my pantry. No more having to run to the store to buy those things if I run out, no more throwing away food that went bad. All of those items have no added preservatives, and are just add water. I use them in place of their fresh counterparts in almost any recipe, and because so many of them are freeze-dried, once you add water, they turn back into the original fresh item, and retain the same nutritional value as their fresh counterparts. And should an emergency arise, I have "food insurance" to take care of my family with, and we're not just talking rice and beans. So that's exciting for me, and I want to share that excitement with everyone else.

People who are interested in learning more have a few options:

1 - Host a party. For friends and family who live locally, if you provide the house and the guests, I'll bring the food, the presentation, etc and we can sample lots of the items so you can taste for yourself what I'm talking about. (they have great host benefits too that let you earn free and half-off products) If you really want to host a party and live further away, let me know. I'll ship you some samples and answer questions via skype. :-)

2- Visit my website: www.WhitneyHemsath.shelfreliance.com. You can view products here, and place orders directly, but if you want to get the lowest price possible, e-mail me your order and I"ll get you the party pricing.

3- E-mail with any questions - ThriveWithHemsath@gmail.com.

4 - Visit my new blog to read reviews on certain products, see pictures of different recipes using food storage items as well as Dustin's review of the recipe, etc. I would appreciate any help I can get sharing the blog information with others, so please feel free to invite your friends, family and neighbors to check it out. It is: http://ThriveWithHemsath.blogspot.com.

This new business endeavor has been dominating my life lately, but I promise to post new pictures soon. Between the bed bug fiasco, Jason's potty training, family pictures, Evan really getting all smiley, there is a lot to post. So stay tuned, and again, thanks for any help I can get spreading the word about my new business.

What a blessing

On Sunday May 2nd, Evan Joseph Hemsath was blessed by his daddy in the Stone Creek Ward down here in San Tan Valley. It was a beautiful blessing, and a number of family members made the hour long drive to come share that moment with us. Considering the services started at 8am, that support is even more appreciated. After the blessing, Daddy held Evan up for everyone to see before returning to his seat, at which point Jason, quite loudly, declared, "That's my brother!" He continued to state that declaration over and over, with some possessive emphasis on the "my". Everyone was chuckling while I was trying to quite him down. He was, and is, a proud big brother.

After the church services, we had a small family luncheon for those who could stay. It was nice to spend time with family and we're grateful they were able to come support us. Katie even got Evan to smile FOR THE CAMERA! So that was another highlight. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

HAPPY EASTER!

Happy Easter everyone! Hope that first picture made you smile. I had fun with him doing those. This is the one where he is closest to smiling. I haven't been able to capture Evan smiling in a picture yet, but he is smiling more and more. Usually in little bursts. We'll do something to make him smile, and then we drop everything to milk as many smiles out fo him while he's in the smiling mood. I can't wait for him to masters those muscles to be able to smile more and more. And then I'll get all the photos I can stand.

Easter Sunday was good at our house. After our 8-11am church, we came home and well, the video explains what happened when we walked in:

Here's Evan in his Easter Sunday outfit. The tie is from a garage sale I went to a while back, but the shirt and overalls are actually the outfit that Dustin was blessed in when he was a baby. So almost 30 years ago. I like that it looks like Evan is loosening his tie after a long day's work.

After we came home, it was nap time for the boys and prep time for mom and dad. The ham went in the oven, other eggs were filled with candy, and then we went out in the yard to hide them. Our friends the Weidners were coming over to have dinner and some Easter fun with us. We had been growing out our grass extra long to make for a better hiding place. As we went out to hide our goodies in the TALL green thick lawn we've cultivated, we discovered we had been watering it too much, because there are mushrooms growing all over. So we will cut the grass and cut back on the watering now that the hunt is over. But the kdis had fun finding their eggs. Here are some pictures.

All in all, it was a great Easter. I even got the inspriation for an animated short film (2-3 minutes) that I think has a lot of potential to maybe get me noticed by Pixar someday. So I am working on that script, as well as being busy finally rewriting my old animated feature from college. It was a really good Easter for all of the reasons you've read and seen here. But even without those things, Easter would have been great because no matter what happens, I will live again. Death will never conquer my sweet boys. My family will be together in the eternities. Because my Savior suffered and died on the cross, and was gloriously resurrected three days later, I do not fear the whispered taunts and threats of this world and its mortality. I testify that the tomb was in fact empty, and that Sunday morning so many years ago, mankind was truly made free. I love my Savior, and I hope your Easter was filled with His love and peace, just as ours was. Happy Easter!

Best Brothers

Jason has taken to refering to many a person as his "best friend". He first said it in reference to Evan, which of course just melted my heart. However, he meets a kid at the store and refers to them as his best friend, so I realize the title doesn't hold much importance like I wish it did. But the other day, he asked, "Where's my best baby Evan?" I love the silly things Jay says. Here are a few picture of the best baby Evan we know, and the older brother who loves him so.

Long time, no sleep

It's long overdue, but here is the post you've been waiting for. I apologize to those who aren't on facebook; I tend to post updates and photos there first, and then forget to update the blog as well, or in this case, don't have time to update both. But to get straight to the point... HE'S HERE!!! Evan Joseph Hemsath entered the world at 9:59pm March 2nd, 2011. 8 lbs 12 oz and 22 inches of yummy perfection. The whole labor and delivery was about five and half hours long. Had an epidural, only had to push twice, and the whole process went pretty smoothly, with quick recoveries for everyone.

There was one small issue with Evan. He made these funny noises when he breathed. they told us it was called Stridor and was no reason to be concerned. After investigating it and taking him to a few more doctors to make sure, we learned he has laryngolmalacia. Laryngo meaning larynx and malacia meaning soft or flimsy. In otherwords, the cartilage of his windpipe wasn't as stong as it should be, and when he breathed, it collapsed slightly for a moment, creating that Stidor. It didn't affect his oxygen levels, it was just noisy. We were told he would grow into it, there was nothing to do to treat it, and that most kids had lost all the Stridor by about 2 years. The first few days were rough because the Stridor at times like a cute chirp or squeak, and at other times like he was gasping for breath. Awake, asleep, didn't matter, he made the noises. I was well aware of the advice, "sleep when they sleep" and tried to take advantage of it. But on the rare occasion both Jason and Evan were napping at the same time, I couldn't nap, because Evan kept making these noises that sounded like he was going to choke at any minute, or his chirps were so loud I couldn't sleep through them. Here's a video I took that captures a little bit of what his noises were like.
Thankfully, at about 1 month, Evan started growing out of his Stridor. Today, his Stridor moments are less frequent and less loud. I forget he has it at all sometimes. What a tender mercy that is, because I really didn't think I could handle it for two whole years. Jason is adjusting as well as he can. He is starving for attention, and acts out sometimes, but he loves his brother and always wants to hold him or give him a binky. Jason's energy is crazy, he's bouncing off the walls most of the time, and we're trying to teach him its not okay to climb all over everyone, especially when they're holding the baby, and that there's a difference between hugging his brother and squeezing him too hard. It's a work in progress. But Jason is a silly, hyper, loving boy and is a good big brother. He is lucky to have not just one baby in his life, but two. My sister Katie had her baby five weeks before Evan, so they are cousins that feel more like twins size-wise. Jason was thrilled to get to hold both babies at a brunch after Evolette's blessing in church. So here is Jason with babies Evan and Evie. Evan is a great baby and we feel so blessed to have such beautiful kids. We are loving having Evan as part of our family and are grateful to be an eternal family, thanks to temple ordinances. I'll post more stories and photos later, but this will hopefully hold you over for now.

Ready or not

It's funny, in a way, how the trials of life catch you off guard. They say things happen when you least expect it. Not sure if I agree. Sometimes, you are totally expecting it. Like with parenthood. You have heard it's hard, and you are expecting it to be hard. So when it IS hard, it really is no surprise. The surprise, is how it is hard, and sometimes, how hard it is. So i don't think that trials happen when you least expect them because they happen whether you expect them or not. I am beginning to think, however, that they happen HOW you least expect them. Eitherway, expectations are futile.

Speaking of expecations and parenthood, we are still expecting. Due date is still set as March 1st. Per my appointment on the 14th, I was already 50% effaced and over 2 cm dilated. But that's the same place I was with Jason 11 days before he arrived. So I don't think I'll go past my due date, but i don't think it's coming "any minute" necessarily. It's already been 6 days since the appt and my Braxton's have calmed down the past few days, so I'm guessing this kiddo will probably come some time between the 25th and 28th.

Other than that guestimate above, I haven't really thought much about his impending arrival. Dustin and I haven't found a name that we both love yet. Lots of names we're both okay with, or names that one of us loves and the other isn't crazy about. But everytime we try and research and discuss names, I feel like we don't get anywhere, so i decided I wouldn't spend any more time worrying about it or trying to figure it out. Just take the books and our lists to the hospital and figure it out once we see him.

And I think its precisely that attitude that has led to my current trial, which is, the realization that I'm not necessarily excited for this baby to come. Realizing that makes me feel horrible. Awful, almost. I'm not bummed he's coming, or sad bout it at all, but I"m not anxious and excited. not like I was with jason.

Logically, it makes sense. The first kid changes everything. Quitting my full time job and getting to be a stay at home mother. Having to take birthing classes and read books and learn all I can about how to be a parent. Not knowing what to expect at all. having all these baby showers and counting down the days. Day dreaming about all the possibilities. The pending arrival of our first child seemed to consume our thoughts. Now, with this second one, things don't feel so urgent. No birthing classes or pregnancy books to read - I've done this before. No baby gear to buy, no need for a shower since its another boy. I'm too busy keeping up with the house, my callings, and my 2 year old son, to think too much about this other son inside of me. It's doesn't seem like as big a deal. Which is what makes me feel like a horrible mother.

I feel like I'm doing him some big disservice by not being more focused on his arrival. It doesn't feel right to feel so non-chalant about it all. Maybe it just hasn't really hit home yet; there is the possibility I haven't let it sink in that I really am going to have another little life joining our family and home. I mean the clothes are washed, the hospital has been toured, arrangements have been made for watching Jason, batteries are on hand for the mobile, the swing, etc. I've done what I can to be ready, but I don't feel ready. I don't feel anything, really.

In short, I've gone through the motions to get ready for baby #2, but it doesn't feel like I've gone through the emotions to get ready for him. When is that supposed to happen? Is it like this for most people with subsequent chilren? Or is something wrong with me?

Blue's Clues

I thought I'd try and blog about how much my son Jason is in love with "Blue's Clues." If you aren't familiar with this kid's show, here's the basic run-down: Real-life Steve has a cartoon puppy named Blue, and every episode they play "Blue's Clues" to figure out what Blue wants to do, eat, play, etc. Blue leaves a blue paw-print on three different items, to indicate that its a clue. Throughout the show, they find a clue, draw that item in Steve's handy-dandy notebook, and when we have all three clues, Steve sits down in the thinking chair and we figure out what those three clues are trying to tell us.

Well, Jason found a little notebook, which is now his Handy Dandy Notebook. "Ti-ee Ti-ee Wotebook!" as he proudly calls it. He has a few thinking chairs ("pinking chairs") that he has claimed both at his house, and at Grandma and Grandpa's. He loves to sit down and pretend to draw. It usually begins with "Okay, so..." and usually ends with a request for Mommy to help him draw a cactus, choo-choo, pawprint, Steve, puppy, the gym, whatever he comes up with at the time. Here is a picture of him drawing himself some clues.
However, he doesn't just make up his own clues. He finds them all over the place. I am amazed at where he finds things shaped like a pawprint. We'll be out and about at the store, and all of a sudden he is pointing excitedly and proclaiming at the top of his lungs, "A Clue! A Clue!" It sometimes takes me a minute to realize what he is referring to, but sure enough, there is something resembling a paw print (i.e. a big circle with 3+ smaller circles above it) that he has found. His perspective and observation amaze me. If you are looking for paw print clues, you can find them just about anywhere (the dirty spot stains on my unmopped kitchen floor, the bubble formations in the bath, the actual underside of a dog's foot, etc.) It's made me wonder how true this is of things other than pawprints. such as blessings. How many blessings are in my life, waiting to be discovered, but I don't notice them, because I'm not looking for them? Needless to say, my two year old has taught me that it's pretty hard to find what you aren't looking for, and with the right perspective, a whole world opens up.

Anyway, here are some pictures of different clues he has found that have amazed me. Note the backs of the frogs in his bedtime story, the chicken shaped head on my fast food cup, and the blue information on the paper box. Can you spot the clues as well as Jason did?
